Six-year-old Gretl Schmidt is on a train bound for Aushwitz. Jakób Kowalski is planting a bomb on the tracks. As World War II draws to a close, Jakób fights with the Polish resistance against the crushing forces of Germany and Russia. They intend to destroy a German troop transport, but Gretl’s unscheduled train reaches the bomb first. Gretl is the only survivor. Though spared from the concentration camp, the orphaned German Jew finds herself lost in a country hostile to her people. When Jakób discovers her, guilt and fatherly compassion prompt him to take her in. For three years, the young man and little girl form a bond over the secrets they must hide from his Catholic family. But she can’t stay with him forever. Jakób sends Gretl to South Africa, where German war orphans are promised bright futures with adoptive Protestant families—so long as Gretl’s Jewish roots, Catholic education, and connections to communist Poland are never discovered. Separated by continents, politics, religion, language, and years, Jakób and Gretl will likely never see each other again. But the events they have both survived and their belief that the human spirit can triumph over the ravages of war have formed a bond of love that no circumstances can overcome.

It is just a daily train ride, a little imagination running wild as she enjoys the scenery from her window seat. It is something we all do, right? Rachel Watson makes up innocent stories about the people she sees. For Rachel it is comforting, something steadfast in her crumbling world. She rides the train every morning like she always has, but without the purpose she once had. Her failed marriage and her descent into alcoholism make her an outcast. She rides into town to a job she no longer has, only to come back at the end of the day to a roommate she is lying to. She has no purpose and nothing seems to be changing until she witnesses something important. Rachel's favorite imaginary couple that she peers at every day from the train seem to be having trouble. She calls them "Jason" and "Jess." Rachel can't quite figure out where she fits in. She was wandering around in a drunken stupor the night "jess" disappears. Rachel starts trying to regain her memories from that night. She tries to piece together the memories of that hazy night. Rachel's new found hobby is a welcome distraction from her life and problems. She has been dealing not only with an ex-husband, but his new wife as well. Once his mistress, Anna is now having Tom's baby. Rachel feels inadequate as a result of her infertility and her alcohol problems, blaming herself for the demise of her marriage. Rachel starts out trying to offer a little information into what might have happened to "Jess," but she becomes obsessed with the case and the people in it. Rachel tries to fill a void with strangers and a case that, supposedly, has nothing to do with her. As Rachel learns to trust herself and her instincts she comes face to face with something she never expected. Read more.... Download your copy today! Anthony Lane on Con Air— “Advance word on Con Air said that it was all about an airplane with an unusually dangerous and potentially lethal load. Big deal. You should try the lunches they serve out of Newark. Compared with the chicken napalm I ate on my last flight, the men in Con Air are about as dangerous as balloons.” Anthony Lane on The Bridges of Madison County— “I got my copy at the airport, behind a guy who was buying Playboy’s Book of Lingerie, and I think he had the better deal. He certainly looked happy with his purchase, whereas I had to ask for a paper bag.” Anthony Lane on Martha Stewart— “Super-skilled, free of fear, the last word in human efficiency, Martha Stewart is the woman who convinced a million Americans that they have the time, the means, the right, and—damn it—the duty to pipe a little squirt of soft cheese into the middle of a snow pea, and to continue piping until there are ‘fifty to sixty’ stuffed peas raring to go.” For ten years, Anthony Lane has delighted New Yorker readers with his film reviews, book reviews, and profiles that range from Buster Keaton to Vladimir Nabokov to Ernest Shackleton. Nobody’s Perfect is an unforgettable collection of Lane’s trademark wit, satire, and insight that will satisfy both the long addicted and the not so familiar. From the Trade Paperback edition.

You don't remember her--but she remembers you. Two different women; two different worlds. On the face of it, Emma and Nina have very little in common. Isolated and exhausted by early motherhood, Emma finds her confidence is fading fast. Nina is sophisticated and assured, a successful artist who seems to have it all under control. And yet, when the two women meet, they are irresistibly drawn to each other. As the friendship develops, as Emma gratefully invites Nina into her life, it emerges that someone is playing games-and the stakes could not be higher. What, exactly, does Nina see in Emma? What does she want? And how far will she go in pursuit of it? A gripping novel about friendship and identity, about the wild hopes and worst fears of parenthood, about the small and easily forgotten moments that come to define a life, Her is unputdownable-compelling and hauntingly discomfiting.

Instant #1 New York Times Bestseller! For readers of Gillian Flynn and Tana French comes one of the decade’s most anticipated debuts, to be published in thirty-six languages around the world and already in development as a major film from Fox: a twisty, powerful Hitchcockian thriller about an agoraphobic woman who believes she witnessed a crime in a neighboring house. It isn’t paranoia if it’s really happening . . . Anna Fox lives alone—a recluse in her New York City home, unable to venture outside. She spends her day drinking wine (maybe too much), watching old movies, recalling happier times . . . and spying on her neighbors. Then the Russells move into the house across the way: a father, mother, their teenaged son. The perfect family. But when Anna, gazing out her window one night, sees something she shouldn’t, her world begins to crumble and its shocking secrets are laid bare. What is real? What is imagined? Who is in danger? Who is in control? In this diabolically gripping thriller, no one—and nothing—is what it seems. Twisty and powerful, ingenious and moving, The Woman in the Window is a smart, sophisticated novel of psychological suspense that recalls the best of Hitchcock.

In what has been a massive success for first time thriller writer Paula Hawkins, The Girl on a Train is a novel packed full of suspense. Highly revered by Stephen King himself, the psychological thriller went straight in at number one on the New York Times Fiction Best Sellers of 2015, not being knocked off for thirteen weeks. Further praise for this book is given by Dreamworks acquiring the film rights to it, and the film adaptation will be ready for release in October this year. A first person narrative details the chilling story from the viewpoint of Rachel, Anna and Megan. Rachel finds her life wrought in jealousy, despair and alcohol abuse following the breakdown of her marriage to Tom. After being tormented by learning Tom not only had a mistress, Anna, but has now remarried and had a child with her too, Rachel plunges into alcoholism and loses her job. The pain of not being able to conceive a child with her husband herself drives Rachel to extreme lengths, taking her old route to work on the train so as not to rouse suspicion of losing her job, and also fantasize whilst passing her former married home. The story is wrought with jealousy, despair and follows many chilling twists and turns as each character's story begins to intertwine and Rachel, Anna and Megan become linked to each other, in macabre circumstances. It becomes clear that Rachel's drinking blackouts have clashed with her obsession with Megan, a woman Rachel has taken to watching along with her husband and imagining their perfect life together. When Megan is reported missing on the news, a bloodied Rachel feels she may be involved and the story becomes embroiled in police investigation and darker twists and turns. In turmoil, Rachel begins trying to find out more about Megan's disappearance and in doing so, gives herself a new focus instead of drinking. She becomes close with Megan's husband, Scott in order to try and learn more and in doing so, lies to him to get closer to him. In a horrific discovery, Megan's body is found and also was evidently pregnant. The fog of Rachel's alcohol abuse begins to clear and she recalls seeing Megan entering Tom's car, thus revealing an affair between them to his new wife Anna. Upon being confronted by Anna, Tom confesses the murder to her by the motive of her threatening to speak out about her pregnancy. In a fast paced turn of events, Tom begins attacking Rachel to silence her, but Rachel stands up for herself. She finds her strength and kills Tom with a corkscrew, with Anna helping and creating alibis to create a story of self defence.
